COACHING INFO & FAQs

League coaches are volunteers. Each team needs a set of 2-5 volunteers willing to help deliver a great football experience for their child's team. This includes organizing team communications, scheduling practices, and leading the team on game day.

There are other parents that I want to coach with, will the league accommodate that? If the kids all go to the same school, it increases the possibility that we can accommodate. Coach registrants may list up to 2 coaching colleague requests. We will generally accommodate a group of 3 coaching mates, but if there's a group of 4 wanting to coach together, they are subject to being asked to break into 2x2 if there are going to be 2 teams from that school/community and there are no other coaches available.

Can I choose to be head coach or assistant coach? Not on the registration. Everyone simply signs up to be involved as a coach. We then link all the coach registrants from the same grade division & school/community in a group message and let them work out those coaching arrangements together.

What is the commitment? 3 times per week for 8-10 weeks, August-October. Two practices and one game per week. Games are one hour on a weeknight.

How is the team managed? Through the TeamSnap app (also available on web browser). The league will assemble the teams in the software and assign team managers/admin. From there, team leaders can schedule practices & games and manage communications with parents. It has email, team chat, and other alert capabilities and should be very helpful for administering these team logistics.

Do we set up our own practice times & locations? Yes. Schedule times and locations that work best for you and your team. We recommend practicing at local park, schools, and other public green spaces.

What is required to coach? All coaches must complete an online registration with the league in order to appear on a team sideline at a RedZone League game. All coach registrants are subject to a background screen.

What team equipment is provided? Teams are issued 3 footballs, 8 cones, a bag, and a flag set for each player. The balls, cones, and bag are due back at the end of the season. Additionally, coaches will be given uniforms and other apparel ordered by players for distribution. Players keep all that stuff at the end of the season including their flags.

Are there playing time requirements? Yes. Each player must play at least 3 series per half. This still leaves room to play preferred lineups for some parts of the game.

What help and coaching support do you offer?  We offer a preseason rules meeting via Zoom meeting and/or recorded videos, on-field demonstrations in-person, digital resources in a shared coaches folder, and consultation with RedZone staff as needed.

Is prior coaching experience required to coach? No. While we prefer coaches with prior coaching experience, especially in RZL, we aren't always in a position to be real choosy about who the coach is and are prepared to help new coaches lead a great season.
